In 1973, the global oil market was a closed club controlled by the “Seven Sisters” (the major oil cartels) trading on fixed, long-term contracts at around $2 to $3 a barrel. When the Arab oil embargo hit, the theoretical market panicked.

Marc Rich didn’t look at a screen.
He looked at physical bottlenecks.

He bypassed the cartels and invented the “spot market.” He bought physical crude from countries like Iran at $12 a barrel and flipped it to desperate, freezing buyers in Europe for $30 a barrel. He didn’t predict a chart pattern; he controlled the physical vessel when no one else could.

The data gets even more brutal. In 1979, during the Iranian hostage crisis, Washington slapped a total embargo on Iranian oil. On paper, Iran was isolated.
In reality, Marc Rich bought crude directly from Ayatollah Khomeini’s national oil company and shipped it to apartheid South Africa and the State of Israel.

The Reality of the Trade

This is the reality of physical commodity trading.
The highest margins are never found in free markets.
They are found in the chokeholds.

A physical trade operator knows that when a geopolitical crisis hits, the cargo doesn’t disappear. It just changes its Certificate of Origin, switches vessels in the middle of the ocean (ship-to-ship transfers), and is sold at a 400% premium to someone who desperately needs the physical molecules, not a paper derivative.
